Overview

Acne management extends far beyond prescribing a topical cream or antibiotic. As disease severity progresses, practitioners must confidently assess acne subtype, recognise associated conditions, select evidence-based therapies, and develop structured long-term management plans.

Acne Skin Advanced is an intermediate online course designed specifically for registered medical professionals who want to strengthen their clinical understanding of acne and apply current evidence-based treatment strategies in everyday practice.

Building upon foundational acne knowledge, this course explores acne pathophysiology, validated grading systems, differential diagnoses, topical and systemic pharmacological therapies, procedural treatments, and practical treatment algorithms. Participants will also learn how to manage relapse, maintain long-term disease control, and identify when specialist referral is appropriate.

What Will You Learn?

This course provides a structured clinical framework for the assessment and management of acne.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Understand the anatomy of the pilosebaceous unit and the mechanisms driving acne pathogenesis.
Apply validated acne grading systems to classify disease severity and guide treatment decisions.
Differentiate acne vulgaris from common differential diagnoses and coexisting dermatological conditions.
Select evidence-based topical therapies appropriate for different acne presentations.
Understand the indications, mechanisms, benefits and limitations of systemic acne therapies.
Incorporate adjunctive treatments including chemical peels, LED therapy, lasers and photodynamic therapy into clinical management.
Develop practical treatment algorithms for mild, moderate and severe acne.
Recognise when referral to a dermatologist is appropriate.
Manage acne in special populations, including pregnancy.
Develop long-term maintenance strategies that minimise relapse and reduce scarring.

Course Chapters

Chapter 1 | Understanding Acne

Explore the epidemiology of acne vulgaris, the anatomy of the pilosebaceous unit, the skin microbiome, acne pathogenesis, and the internal and external factors that contribute to disease development.

Chapter 2 | Lesion Classification & Severity Grading

Learn to accurately identify acne lesions, apply validated grading systems including the Investigator Global Assessment (IGA) and Global Acne Grading System (GAGS), assess disease severity, and differentiate acne from common clinical mimics.

Chapter 3 | Topical Therapies

Develop an evidence-based understanding of topical acne treatments including retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, topical antibiotics, salicylic acid, niacinamide and azelaic acid, including mechanisms of action, indications and clinical considerations.

Chapter 4 | Systemic Therapies

Explore oral antibiotics, hormonal therapies, isotretinoin and intralesional corticosteroids, including patient selection, contraindications, adverse effects and current prescribing principles

Chapter 5 | Adjunctive Treatments

Review the evidence supporting chemical peels, manual extraction, laser therapies, LED therapy and photodynamic therapy as part of comprehensive acne management.

Chapter 6 | Clinical Management

Bring everything together through practical treatment algorithms, maintenance protocols, relapse prevention, pregnancy considerations and evidence-based referral pathways.
